People’s National Party’s Shadow Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lisa Hanna is accusing the government of arrogantly disregarding the Jamaican Diaspora in the process being used to establish the new Global Jamaica Diaspora Council, GJDC.
In a statement, over the weekend Ms Hanna says the Jamaican Diaspora is a national asset which must not be politicized.
She accused foreign affairs Minister Kamina Johnson Smith of having no dialogue with the Opposition while appointing herself and fourteen other members to the Council.
Ms. Hanna says Minister Johnson Smith has effectively given herself control of the Diaspora voice which the Opposition Spokeswoman views as blatantly immoral.
She also accuses the Minister of ignoring the cries of members of the National Association of Jamaican and Supportive Organisations who have warned against the Ministry’s control of the process and the autonomy of the Diaspora.
Ms. Hanna’s statement follows similar sentiments expressed by some members of the Jamaican Diaspora in the United States.
According to members representing the North East Region of the United States the current structure of the council will not adequately address the concerns of the Diaspora.
